SCIENCE CLUB ACTIVITY – FOOD WEB

Topic: Understanding the Interdependence of Living Organisms

Class: Middle School

Subject: Science

Activity: Food Web Demonstration

Method: Hands-on experiential learning

Introduction

The Science Club conducted an interactive activity on the topic “Food Web” to help students understand the relationship between different living organisms in an ecosystem.

Aim

To demonstrate how living organisms are interconnected through food relationships and understand the flow of energy in an ecosystem.

Materials Required

  • Picture cards representing different organisms
  • Thread
  • Students

Procedure

1. Students were assigned different picture cards representing organisms in an ecosystem.

2. They stood in a circle holding their respective cards.

3. A student holding the card of one organism connected the thread to another organism that it depends on for food.

4. The thread  was passed from one student to another, forming a network of interconnected organisms.

5. Students observed how the different organisms were linked through their food relationships.

Observation

Students observed that several organisms were interconnected through feeding relationships. The network formed by the string represented a food web and showed how organisms depend on one another for food and survival.

Learning Outcomes

Through this activity, students:

  • Identified the feeding relationships between different organisms.
  •  Understood the difference between a food chain and a food web.
  • Recognized the interdependence of living organisms in an ecosystem.
  •  Developed teamwork, communication and observation skills.
  •  Understood that changes in one organism can affect other organisms in the food web.

Conclusion

The activity provided an enjoyable and meaningful learning experience. Students actively participated in creating a food web and understood that all living organisms are interconnected. They learnt that maintaining the balance of an ecosystem is essential for the survival of living organisms.
