SCIENCE CLUB ACTIVITY – SOUND TELEPHONE

Topic: Transmission of Sound Through a Thread

Class: Middle School

Subject: Science

Activity: Making a Paper Cup Telephone

Method: Hands-on learning and demonstration

Introduction

Middle School students enthusiastically participated in a Science Club activity to make a simple telephone using two paper cups and a thread. The activity helped students understand how sound travels through vibrations and how messages can be communicated using a simple device.

Aim

To demonstrate how sound travels through a stretched thread and enables communication between two people.

Materials Required

- Two paper cups

- Thread

- Small stick or pencil to make holes

Procedure

1. Students made a small hole at the center of the bottom of each paper cup.

2. They passed a long thread through the holes and tied it securely inside each cup.

3. Two students held the cups at opposite ends, keeping the thread stretched tightly.

4. One student spoke into the cup while the other listened through the second cup.

5. Students exchanged roles and communicated messages using the paper cup telephone.

Observation

Students observed that the sound of their friend's voice could be heard through the paper cup telephone when the thread was stretched tightly.

Scientific Explanation

When a student speaks, sound vibrations travel through the air and make the bottom of the cup vibrate. These vibrations travel through the stretched thread to the second cup, producing sound that can be heard by the other student.

Learning Outcomes

Students understood that sound is produced by vibrations and can travel through solids. They explored the practical application of sound transmission and developed communication, teamwork and observation skills.

Conclusion

The activity was an enjoyable and interactive learning experience. Students discovered how sound travels through a stretched thread and understood the scientific principle behind a simple telephone.
